Aperture, a portfolio company of Trinity Hunt Partners, has acquired Biomechanical Research & Testing (BRT), a provider of biomechanical and accident reconstruction forensic engineering services. This is the fourth acquisition by Aperture since its formation by Trinity Hunt in 2019.

BRT is a research and consulting firm focusing on forensic analysis in the fields of biomechanics, human movement, accident reconstruction, mechanical failure, and visibility and conspicuity issues. The company was founded in 1994 by Dr. Judson Welcher and is headquartered in Long Beach, California.

“Our partnership with Aperture is the start of a new and exciting period of growth for BRT,” said Dr. Welcher. “We believe this partnership will enhance our service to existing clients and allow us to serve a larger national customer base, establishing new groundbreaking channels in research, testing, accident reconstruction, biomechanical engineering, and human factors.”

Trinity Hunt formed Aperture in August 2019 to acquire WEXCO International, a Marina del Rey, California-based provider of litigation-focused forensic services that has investigated over 10,000 cases, provided more than 2,000 depositions, and testified in over 600 trials. In August 2020, Aperture added on with the buy of Scientific Analysis, a Dallas-based provider of forensic engineering services used in accident reconstruction. In December 2020, Aperture completed its second add-on in the sector with the buy of VA Forensics, a Carlsbad, California-based provider of biomechanical and accident reconstruction forensic engineering services. Aperture then acquired American Bio Engineers, another biomechanics and accident reconstruction service provider, in July 2021.

Today, Aperture, led by President and CEO Robert Joyce, is headquartered in Arlington, Texas, with additional locations in Texas (Dallas and Cedar Park), California (Carlsbad, Berkeley, Marina del Rey, Long Beach and San Diego), Nevada (Las Vegas), and Arizona (Scottsdale).

“We are excited to welcome our new BRT colleagues to the Aperture team,” said Mr. Joyce. “We are humbled to have the collective expertise, professionalism, and experience of Jud, Dan, Bryan, Isaac, and Chris join us as we continue to build the Aperture service offer across the country, and we look forward to working with the BRT team during our journey ahead. The addition of their preeminent expertise to the team significantly expands the value we collectively bring to our clients.”

“The BRT team’s subject matter expertise, market-leading research, and in-depth testing greatly expand and build upon the existing Aperture service offering,” said John Oakes, a Trinity Hunt principal. “We look forward to further supporting Aperture in its strategic initiatives as a market leader in the forensic engineering space.”

Dallas-based Trinity Hunt invests in founder and family-owned companies that have EBITDA between $4 million and $25 million. Sectors of interest include business services, industrial growth, non-cyclical consumer products, and healthcare services. In September 2021, Trinity Hunt held a final closing of its sixth fund, Trinity Hunt Partners VI LP, with an oversubscribed $460 million of capital commitments. The new fund exceeded its initial target of $400 million and closed at its hard cap.

Monroe Capital was the sole lead arranger and administrative agent on the funding of a senior credit facility to support Aperture’s buy of BRT.
