Blue Sage Builds Purpose Legal with Hire Counsel Buy

Blue Sage Capital has added on to its Purpose Legal portfolio company with the buy of Hire Counsel, combining two providers of managed review, flexible legal staffing, and legal operations services. Hire Counsel was a portfolio company of Long Point Capital.

Founded in 1993 by Joan Davison, Hire Counsel provides managed document review, flexible attorney staffing, and project management services used by law firms, corporations, and government entities. Customers deploy its teams for litigation support, regulatory matters, and large-scale investigations. Greg Mazares serves as chief executive. Hire Counsel maintains a network of more than 70,000 attorneys nationwide. The company is headquartered in Dallas.

Austin, Texas-based Blue Sage specializes in partnering with founders, families, and management teams as the first round of institutional capital for businesses in the niche manufacturing, environmental solutions, or specialty services industries. In January 2025, Blue Sage held a final closing of its fourth fund with $618 million of capital. The new fund closed above its original $400 million target and its original hard cap of $550 million.
