TZP Group has added Tamar Shapiro, the former head of analytics at Instagram, to its portfolio operations group as a new partner.
Ms. Shapiro assumes the new title of Partner of Data & Analytics and she will work with TZP’s portfolio companies to leverage their data and analytics to expand engagement, sales and profitability.
From 2017 to 2022, Ms. Shapiro led a team of more than 350 data scientists and data engineers at Instagram that used modeling, experimentation, analytics and data to identify opportunities and launch products and services to meet the needs of Instagram’s more than one billion daily users. Before Instagram, Ms. Shapiro was the head of analytics at Foursquare and she also spent 12 years at American Express and led all analytics efforts for American Express’ digital division.
“Data science is mission-critical for companies seeking to deepen their connections with customers,” said Sam Katz, the managing partner of TZP Group. “We recruited Tamar, one of the leading data scientists in the country, to take on this new role because she is at the forefront of leveraging technology and data to help companies at all stages maximize their engagement and growth. Tamar’s expertise is unique in the lower middle-market private equity space. What’s more, her ability to create a strong analytics foundation for our portfolio companies will be core to their growth stories.”
In addition to working with TZP’s portfolio companies, Ms. Shapiro will also collaborate with TZP’s investment professionals to apply advanced data and analytics for sourcing investments, conducting due diligence and assessing performance.
“Lower middle-market companies are sitting on treasure troves of data, but don’t necessarily have the in-house resources to monetize or leverage it to drive their business outcomes,” said Ms. Shapiro. “As a data scientist, I see that ‘void’ as an opportunity to provide them with world-class data infrastructures that will give them a significant competitive edge in their verticals. I chose TZP because the firm is well-positioned to capture this opportunity, distinctly adheres to a core set of deeply held values and operates with a rigorous process-oriented approach.”
Ms. Shapiro has a Bachelor of Science in Statistics and Biometry from Cornell University and a Master of Science in Engineering from Columbia University.
New York City-based TZP Group makes control and minority investments of between $10 million and $100 million in lower and mid-market companies that are active in consumer products, sales and marketing, travel and hospitality, real estate logistics and services, industrial services, tech and tech-enabled services, outsourced administrative services, and education sectors.
